Natural Diamonds: The 4 Cs to Choose Well (Guide)
When buying a diamond, everyone talks about "the 4 Cs". It sounds technical, but it's simple and helps you spend your budget well. Here it is in plain terms, from a workshop that works only with certified natural diamonds.
The 4 Cs
1. Cut — the most important
It's how the diamond is cut, and it's what makes it sparkle. An excellently cut diamond returns light like a mirror; a poorly cut one looks dull even if large. If you must prioritise one C, prioritise cut.
2. Colour
Graded from D (colourless, purest) downward. The more colourless, the cleaner it looks. Tip: in yellow or rose gold you can drop a little colour without it showing, and save.
3. Clarity
The diamond's tiny natural inclusions. Many aren't visible to the naked eye. You don't need maximum clarity — "eye-clean" is enough.
4. Carat
The weight (size). Price rises non-linearly: just under the round weights (0.90 instead of 1.00 ct) usually offers great value.
How to prioritise on a budget
Our usual recipe: excellent cut + eye-clean clarity + colour balanced with the metal + the size your budget allows. That gets you maximum sparkle for your money.
Why certified and natural
An independent certificate guarantees what you're buying. And at Arelana we work exclusively with natural diamonds: finite, irreplaceable and better at holding value — which makes sense for a lifelong piece.
